The National Leadership Council class of 2011 is a group of Christian Science teenagers going into their junior year of high school. We are from all across the country and are meeting for our third summer to do service work in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. This is our blog, and we will be updating it before, during and after our service trip with photos, memories, and inspiration from our trip.
"It is not so much academic education, as a moral and spiritual culture, which lifts one higher." Science & Health 235:12
OUR DEFINITION OF SERVICE
• We need to be selfless and realize that this trip is not only about what we can learn from it, but how we can best help the need in our world while still minding for our own safety.
• Optimally, we would create the biggest positive impact possible and fully complete a project that will be somewhat self-sustainable and/or allow the organization we work through to strengthen.
• To provide service that will best use our group's assets.
OUR TOP FIVE PRIORITIES
• Share Christian Science by living it
• Help protect our world
• Personal Development: Spiritual, academic, public speaking
• Solid/lasting NLC relationships
• Be adventurous

This summer our DiscoveryBound National Leadership Class is spending two weeks (July 13-23) in Cedar Rapids and Iowa City, Iowa - a region devastated by floods in June of 2008. We will beworking with The United Way and The Presbyterian Disaster Assistance rebuilding private homes, properties and businesses destroyed by flooding.
The NLC is a multi-year leadership program based on a servant-leadership model and designed for Christian Science high school teens across the country. It is dedicated to fostering spiritual growth, leadership qualities, and service to others. Its purpose is to create a core group of young people who will be active in their branch churches, local communities, DiscoveryBound chapters, and in the active practice of leadership skills and demonstration of Christian Science in their educational and professional pursuits. (see discoverybound.org) We would really like to help as many people as we can while we are in Iowa. Our NLC class is raising money to purchase supplies and tools to pay for the projects we will be working on.
If you would like to make a donation to our flood relief projects - make check to "Sammons" and send your donation to:
DiscoveryBound, NLC 2011 3809 SW 48th PL. Portland, OR 97221
OR you may give your donation to a NLC 2011 student in your area.
To be able to use your donation, the donation must arrive no later than July 6 to the Portland address - or you may make arrangements with your local NLC 2011 teen.
